April 2016 monitoring

April 15, 2016. 3 days after nearly as much rain as normally falls in April – around 2.5 – 3″ (depending of course on the exact location). The temperature was warm, the sky was mostly cloudy, the sun occasionally peeking through. The stream was looking good. No surface algae and good flow. Saw a turtle at the site, and finally saw a pigeon and other birds.

Unsurprisingly, the stream had good flow. While standing above the culvert, I heard the water gurgling in stereo from the waterfall and the culvert behind me. There was no surface algae, and the gravel bar hasn’t changed too much since our last visit. The inlet above the stream was partially full, and the “sometime island” rocks further upstream were peeking out of the water.  With 9 e-coli colonies in a 3 ML sample at both the sample and upstream control sites, they were within acceptable levels for an urban stream.

Observations

air temperature  20 C
water temperature 18 C
dissolved oxygen 7.9
pH 7.0
nitrates 0.25
specific conductance 430
transparency 1.1 meters
