April 2017

April 16, 2017 – overcast and a comfortable temperature. The stream is the usual level – flowing over part of the waterfall but no all, and the “sometime island” rocks in the middle of the stream way upstream are above water. The inflowing water from the parking lot is still flowing over the sidewalk as well as somewhat through the culvert. (That inflowing creek has been higher than right now based on the trash that is scattered around it.) The 4 bridge columns are in the water, and just downstream of the bridge, the stream is narrow enough that someone with a big stride could step across to the other side without getting wet feet. The stream is high enough that it’s not possible to walk to the south side on the upstream side of the bridge.

The sample site and downstream has a bit of surface scum. Just above the waterfall there’s some algae (or other plants) growing above the water level. The submerged algae is starting to grown, it will soon be above the water level.

We saw a turtle by the sample site and also a number of water walkers – at least I saw the dimples they made on the water. Didn’t see any fish, and didn’t hear any birds, including no pigeons. The air still has a slight floral scent. The e-coli counts for both the sample site and control site upstream were low: for 3 ML samples there were under 200 colonies.

Observations:
Air temp  23
Water temp 21.5
pH 7.0
Dissolved oxygen 5.0
specific conductance 520
nitrates .5
