October 2017

October 15 – temperatures are in the normal range of low 80’s instead of near 90 and muggy. Finally. It’s been a long, hot summer (officially 42 days of 100+ temperatures… and easily that many where it only reached 98).

The stream was high enough that all 4 bridge columns were in the water  and it wasn’t possible to walk across on the upstream side with dry feet. On the downstream side of the bridge, there were two narrow streams flowing around the gravel bar. It was possible to cross on the downstream side with dry feet.

No recent rain and the stream was crystal clear. We saw a few small perch, turtles and several schools of gambusia (minnows). Didn’t see or hear any birds, including no pigeons. There was a bit of surface algae near the waterfall, and much more submerged algae that’s growing.

Observations:

pH 7.0
Specific conductance 550
air temperature 22
water temperature 23
dissolved oxygen 4.4
nitrates .6
transparency > 1.2 meters
e-coli
