May 2017 Monitoring

May 13 – beautiful! Wish the summer days were more like today.  Perfect temperature – after a cool night it’s in the low 80s, not a cloud in the sky. Spring is in full bloom; everything is very green.

We had a bit of rain – under an inch – two days ago, along with some marble-sized hail as a storm moved through the area. The stream had a decent amount of water, and no surface algae; there is some submerged algae starting to grow. We also saw a fair amount of gambusia (minnows)  and a few crows were drinking from the stream. No pigeons. The absence of pigeons (and their poop) means one less potential source of e-coli bacteria.

There’s enough water that most of the waterfall width has water.  The “sometime island” rocks above the waterfall are visible. And the culvert that has water from the parking lot and beyond is working again; the sidewalk is clean and try

Observations:

air temp 22 C
water temp 21 C
dissolved oxygen 6.1
specific conductance 500
pH 7.0
transparency > 1.2 M
nitrates .25 mg/L

e-coli 316 colonies at the sample ste (3 ML) and at the control site 266 – acceptable for an urban stream
